Clothing and Equipment

- All clothing and equipment must pass the gear inspection and be accepted at the registration
- All clothing and equipment you bring in to a section must be carried out
- You are not allowed to leave any equipment, trash or waste on the course. You must carry out all rubbish, clothing and equipment. Failure to do so will result in a time penalty or disqualification
- Compulsory equipment will be randomly checked by the race organisers during the race. Teams must produce their compulsory equipment on request.
For every missing item of equipment your team will be receive a 30 minute penalty. Your time penalties will be calculated and added to your time at either the completion of the race or at a CP. - For every missed equipment detail you will get a 30 min penalty. The penalty time will be regulated at the end of the race, at a CP
Race vest
It is compulsory for each team member to wear their ARWC2006 race vest as their outermost layer of clothing at all times during the race.
Mandatory team boxes/bags to transport the team equipment
- 4 boxes/bags per team. Max 182 litre per box/bag
- 1 large bag for inlines (should fit four pairs of inlines and food for about 5 hours)
- 1 bag for paddles (softshell paddle bag, to fit inside the kayak hatch)
The ARWC race organisation will transport all team's gear boxes/bags. Each team may only have one gear box per TA.
Mandatory full time team equipment - to be carried at all times
- 1 altimeter
- 2 compasses
- 1 Mimas (142 grams) GSM/GPS tracking/safety unit.Your team’s Mimas must be carried with you at all times during the race. The Mimas must be stored in the top of a backpack.
- 1 dry bag for the Mimas unit (must be 100% waterproof)
- 1 dry bag for radio (must be 100% waterproof)
- 1 radio (supplied by the organisation)
- 1 whistle
- 1 waterproof map holder, for maps and road book
- 1 foldable knife
- 20 waterproof matches or a windproof lighter
- 1 waterproof red pen
- 1 four person tent. Your tent must fit 4 people lying down. The race organisation will not allow teams to use just an inner tent/lining. A sup air tent is acceptable.
Note: GPS units are forbidden and will result in a significant time penalty or instant disqualification.
Mandatory First Aid Kit – per team. To be carried at all times
- 1 First aid pressure bandage
- Lifesystems First Aid Kit. Supplied by the organisation
- 8 x second Skin, e.g. Compeed
- 60 cm x 2.5cm Adhesive tape
- 1 Strobe light - White (no headlamp or bike lights) with mandatory 3km visibility. We recommend the "Princetontec Aqua strobe"
Mandatory Personal Equipment (to be carried by each racer at all times unless the ARWC Road Book states otherwise)
- 1 backpack (min 25 litre), the ARWC organisation recommends a 40 litre pack with attachments for ice axes and trekking poles
- 1 sleeping bag (minimum weight 500 gr)
- 1 beanie/Buff
- 1 pair full finger gloves
- 1 long sleeves fleece top, minimum weight 200g
- 1 waterproof jacket (Gore-Tex type)
- 1 pair waterproof pants (Gore-Tex type)
- 1 head torch. 2 hours dusk per day
- 1 waterproof inside sac/dry bag
Team Mountaineering Equipment
- 1 x 50 m dynamic rope, min 8,1 mm. (UIAA Certified Double rope). Your rope will be measured at registration and during equipment checks on the course
- 1 stove with fuel
- 1 pan/kettle/container (minimum 1 litre)
Note: Skis or snowshoes of any kind are forbidden during the mountaineering sections.
Personal Mountaineering Equipment
- 1 pair sturdy shoes/boots with over the ankle support. Must be suitable for crampons.
- 1 pair of crampons. Crampons must cover the entire sole and have a minimum of 10 points
- 1 ice axe, (min 50 cm), with leash. Race ice will be accepted
- 1 approved UIAA climbing harness
- 1 descender/belay device, like ATC or figure 8
- 4 self locking carabineers. Screw carabineers will not be accepted
- 2 prussik loops, (7mm). 150 cm in circumference
- 1 jumar, e.g. Petzl Ascension
- 2 lanyards, 60 cm. Factory sewn
- 1 approved UIAA climbing helmet (biking helmet not accepted). ARWC recommends: Petzl Meteor or Kong Scarab
- 1 down jacket (minimum 400g). Synthetic fillpower is recommended. A down vest is acceptable if the minimum weight is 400g
- 1 pair of extra warm full finger gloves or mitts
- 1 extra beanie
- 1 pair of extra socks
- 1 pair of gaiters (knee high is recommended)
Personal Ropeworks Equipment
- 1 approved UIAA climbing harness
- 1 descender/belay device, like ATC or figure 8
- 4 self locking carabineers. Screw carabineers will not be accepted
- 2 prussik loops (7mm). 150 cm in circumference
- 1 jumar, e.g. Petzl Ascension
- 2 x 60cm lanyards. Factory sewn
- 1 approved UIAA climbing helmet (biking helmet not accepted). ARWC recommends Petzl Meteor or Kong Scarab
Note: Each racer must wear gloves during the rope sections.
Personal Caving Equipment
- 1 wetsuit (long john), minimum 3mm
- 1 approved UIAA climbing harness
- 1 descender/belay device, like ATC or figure 8
- 4 self locking carabineers. Screw carabineers will not be accepted
- 2 prussik loops, 7mm
- 1 jumar, e.g. Petzl Ascension
- 2 x 60cm lanyard. Factory sewn
- 1 approved UIAA climbing helmet (biking helmet not accepted). ARWC recommends: Petzl Meteor or Kong Scarab
Note: The ARWC race organisation recomends that racers bring long armed wetsuit, neoprene socks and neoprene gloves.
Team Mountain Bike Equipment
- 4 bike toolkits. (to assemble and disassemble your bikes)
- 2 bike pumps per team
The ARWC race organisation will transport bikes and hard cases between sections. Each team must assemble and disassemble their own bikes. No external assistance will be allowed.
Personal Mountain Bike Equipment
- 1 mountain bike
- 1 bicycle helmet
- 1 red rear light
- 1 white front light (mounted)
- 1 spare tube (minimum)
- 1 bike hardcase
Team Kayaking Equipment
- 2 throwbags. (minimum 20 meters)
- 2 bilge pumps - one per boat
Kayaking personal equipment
- 1 Type 3 life jacket. Inflatable life jackets are not acceptable
- 1 whistle attached to the life jacket
- 1 wetsuit (long john), minimum 3mm
- 1 kayak paddle
- 1 climbing helmet
Note: The ARWC organisation strongly recommends each racer brings a paddlejacket.
Personal Inlines/Kickbike Equipment
(a kickbike/scooter can be used instead of inlines)
- 1 pair of inlines skates/scooter
- elbow and knee protection
Note: Poles and polebag is recommended (all team members may use poles)
Personal Canyoneering Equipment
- 1 wetsuit (long john), minimum 3mm
- 1 Type 3 life jacket. Inflatable life jackets are not acceptable
- 1 whistle attached to the life jacket
- 1 climbing helmet
Note: No backpacks can be carried during the canyoneering section. The waterproofed Mimas must be carried in a pocket on one team member’s lifejacket. The ARWC recommends that teams wear neoprene socks, neoprene gloves and a long armed wetsuit during the canyoneering section.
Personal Diving Equipment
- 1 pair of swimming Goggles
Mandatory Team Equipment supplied by the ARWC Organization
- 2 double kayaks, including 3 spray decks per kayak
- 2 sets of ARWC Road Books and 1 map kit per team. The maps scales are 1:100,000 + 1:50,000 + 1:20.000 with vertical interval of 20 meters and 1:10,000
- 4 ARWC 2006 race vests to be worn as the outermost layer at all times(including over life-jackets)
- 4 number plates with race numbers on the bike handlebars
- 1 Zodiac radio
- 1 Mimas (142 grams) GSM/GPS tracking/safety
